LEXINGTON, Ky., Oct. 4 (UPI) -- The co-pilot of Comair Flight 5191, who was the only survivor of the Aug. 27 crash in Kentucky, is out of the hospital to begin his rehabilitation.
James Polehinke was discharged from the University of Kentucky Hospital Tuesday and entered the Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital in Lexington, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported. The plane crashed after taking off on the wrong runway at Blue Grass Airport.
Polehinke was pulled from the plane's burning wreckage by rescuers. He suffered multiple injuries and doctors later had to amputate his left leg. His right foot was surgically repaired.
His mother, Honey Jackson, told the newspaper he is becoming more lucid and asking more questions about the crash that killed 49 people.
"My son will walk out of the state of Kentucky," Jackson said. "That's what we are praying for and that's the only thing we are thinking about."
Polehinke was upgraded to fair condition Monday after showing continuing clinical progress, the hospital said.
