LUSAKA, Zambia, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa was sworn in for a second term in Lusaka Tuesday as his rival vowed to investigate poll results.

The swearing-in was done after the election commission Monday night announced final results showing Mwanawasa had 1,177,846 votes, while runners-up Michael Sata had 804,748 and Hakainde Hichilema, head of a three-party alliance, came in third with 693,772 votes.

Sata told the BBC as many as 400,000 votes appeared not to have been counted in areas where he had expected to do well and said he had lots of time for an official investigation.

"Levy Mwanawasa's term of office does not come to an end until January, 2007," he said. "We have ... three months in which we can clear all of these things."

Mwanawasa's Movement for Multiparty Democracy party won 72 of the 148 contested seats in the 158-seat parliament, and the president also nominates eight members, which will give his party 80 seats.
