Prodigy, 21, about to become doctor
WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg says members of the U.S. Supreme Court "are not necessarily the best lawyers in America," but they revere the court.
This reverence leads justices, no matter who they are, to "make sure we don't do any damage" to the court as an institution," Ginsburg, 73, told the CBS News program "60 Minutes" in an interview broadcast Sunday, the day before the court's new term begins.
"And that means none of us can project our will singly on the others," Ginsburg says.
The only remaining woman on the court after Justice Sandra Day O'Connor retired, Ginsburg said she wished other women had been appointed to the bench.
She also said judges were closer to firefighters than politicians.
"They don't make the fires, but they do their best to put them out," she said. She explained that judges "see that matters are settled peacefully and reasonably and that people don't settle their differences by badgering each other, by coming to blows."
