Judge says R.I. gays can marry in Mass.

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Sept. 30 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts judge has ruled same-sex couples in neighboring Rhode Island can come to the state to get legally married.

Superior Court Judge Tom Connolly determined Friday since there is no law in Rhode Island banning same-sex marriages, homosexuals can come to Massachusetts to tie the knot, the Providence (R.I.) Journal reported Saturday.

The ruling means that couples can get a marriage license in Massachusetts, although Rhode Island town clerks are not obligated to issue them. The ruling came in a lawsuit challenging a 1913 Massachusetts state law that prohibits clerks from issuing marriage licenses to couples from states where their marriage would not be legally recognized.

The Journal noted shortly after the ruling came down, a homosexual rights group posted a "marriage guide" for Rhode Island same-sex couples.
