5-year-old dies after coma at dentist

CHICAGO, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- A 5-year-old Chicago girl has died four days after falling into a coma during a dental procedure.

Diamond Brownridge, who had suffered organ damage and swelling in her brain, died Wednesday in the intensive care unit of Children's Memorial Hospital, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

"We lost Diamond of her own accord," hospital spokeswoman Kathleen Keenan said on behalf of Diamond's family. "She passed naturally with no intervention.

She just stopped breathing."

A spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office said an autopsy has been planned to determine the cause of the death. Children's Memorial Hospital has refused to comment on the cause of her injuries, which were sustained during a routine dental procedure to fill cavities and cap her front teeth at Little Angel Dental in Chicago, the newspaper said.

The Tribune said the dentist performing the procedure released a statement expressing condolences for the child's family, saying: "My family and I extend our deepest sympathies to Diamond's family. We are so sad. May God bless Diamond and her family."
