Uganda says rebels violate truce

JUBA, Sudan, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Uganda Wednesday accused the Lord's Resistance Army of violating a recent truce after rebel paramilitary fighters left a designated area.

The government said it did not know where the rebel fighters were, but their leaving the place where they agreed to stay assembled, the Integrated Regional Information Networks news service reported.

The rebel group said it would not honor the truce and not participate in peace talks until Uganda's armed forces halted operations against resistance army bases across the border in the Sudan and in Congo.

Uganda denies its troops had beset rebel forces.

Ugandan government officials were in Juba, the capital of autonomous southern Sudan, waiting to begin peace talks with resistance army representatives.

The rebel leaders said they were still committed to the peace process and would review their position next week before resuming negotiations.
