CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu said South Africa seems to have lost its "sense of right and wrong."
Tutu, delivering the seventh annual Steve Biko Memorial Lecture Tuesday at the University of Cape Town, said changes were needed to prevent a cycle of oppression, iAfrica.com reported.
"Fundamentally we do not respect one another ... the fact of the matter is that we still, depressingly, do not respect one another," Tutu said of South Africans.
"Perhaps we did not realize just how much apartheid damaged us, so that we seem to have lost our sense of right and wrong."
Tutu criticized those carrying out violent acts against people and property in the country.
"It seems as if we have perverted our freedom," he said. "Rights go hand in hand with respect and dignity."
