WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. Army Gen. John Abizaid, head of the U.S. Central Command, says the international community must ensure that al-Qaida does not gain a national foothold.
In an exclusive interview with DiplomaticTraffic.com, Abizaid said unlike Nazism and Communism, the al-Qaida terrorists have not yet secured a nation of their own. He said international community must make sure that does not happen, the Web site reported.
Abizaid told the Web site, "Peace and stability in the region can be achieved by defeating al-Qaida and their associated movements, by containing revolutionary Iranian ambitions of domination and a desire to build nuclear weapons, and ultimately by coming up with a workable process to come to a lasting settlement of the Arab-Israeli problem."
