Israeli raids Gaza to stop rocket attacks

BEIT HANOUN, Gaza, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Israeli tanks raided the northern Gaza Strip Saturday to stop Palestinian militants from firing rockets at Israeli territory, military officials said.

The raid near the town of Beit Hanoun, on the first day of the Jewish New Year, sought "to stop cells from going into these areas and carrying out rocket attacks," an Israeli army spokesman said.

The rocket landed in an open area south of Ashkelon, causing no injuries, The Jerusalem Port reported.
