Canary Islands 'saturated' with immigrants

MADRID, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- The Canary Islands are "saturated" with illegal migrants, government officials told the EFE news agency.

But the holding centers for the illegal immigrants are not at the point of "collapse," said Antonio Camacho, secretary of state for security.

Some 24,000 illegal migrants have landed in the Canary Islands this year, Spanish officials said.

In an unusual move, more than 200 illegal migrants apparently from Pakistan reached the Canary Islands last week. Most migrants reach the islands by boat from West African nations, officials said.
