ER waiting room death ruled a homicide

WAUKEGAN, Ill., Sept. 15 (UPI) -- The death of a woman in an emergency room in Waukegan, Ill., has been ruled a homicide by a coroner's jury.

The Waukegan News-Sun reported that Thursday's ruling was the first of its kind in Lake County, Ill.

In their verdict Thursday, the jury said the care provided to Beatrice Vance was "a gross deviation from the standard of care that a reasonable person would exercise in the situation. We the jury believe the matter of her death to be a homicide."

A spokeswoman for the hospital did not comment, the newspaper said.

The News-Sun said that on the night of July 28, Monique Vance took her mother, Beatrice Vance, who was having chest pains, to the emergency room of the Vista East Medical Center. Monique Vance was reportedly told to wait, and meanwhile her mother's condition reportedly worsened.

At one point, Monique Vance said she almost called 911 to have her mother transferred to another hospital, the News-Sun said. Beatrice Vance later died from what is believed to be a heart attack.
