WASHINGTON, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush Friday expressed his condolences over the death of former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, praising her as a real Texas politician.

Richards died earlier this week following a battle with cancer.

"She was a hard worker," Bush said. "She was humorous, yet she made a point. I'll miss her."

Bush said he learned a lot in running against Richards, who he said "defined Texas politicians in its best way."

"I wish her family all the best -- and her friends. She had a lot of friends."
