WASHINGTON, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- The U.S. program to pre-register frequent fliers for faster airport check-in may never get off the ground because of rising costs, USA Today reports.
With no publicity, the Transportation Security Administration announced on its Web site this week the cost for enrolling in the Registered Traveler program could be as high as $200 per year, and could go higher.
The TSA first said last year it expected to charge about $30 for a terrorism check. But in this week's announcement, it said it wants to charge another $70 to pay for screeners at checkpoints and an additional $20 for a criminal background check.
TSA spokeswoman Ellen Howe said those costs are in addition to yearly fees of up to $80 that fliers would pay to companies operating the program.
The program would operate only at airports that apply and are approved by TSA and about 20 have applied so far, the newspaper said.
