Fugitive shooting suspect appears in court

BUFFALO, N.Y., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Suspected cop killer Ralph "Bucky" Phillips was arraigned in Buffalo, N.Y., Saturday, a day after he was captured, ending the state's largest manhunt.

Phillips, 44, who eluded police for five months, faces charges in the attempted murder of a state trooper and an unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Officials say they also expect to charge him in the shootings -- one fatal -- of two troopers Aug. 31, CNN said. He could also be charged with burglary and larceny for allegedly stealing more than a dozen vehicles and breaking into numerous cabins and a gun store while a fugitive.

After the four-minute appearance, U.S. marshals took him to the Erie County Holding Center in Buffalo, a pretrial maximum-security facility, CNN reported.

Police said they expected to make additional arrests as they investigated who might have helped Phillips since his escape from jail in April.

Phillips surrendered peacefully in a field over the Pennsylvania state line Friday night.
