NATO seeks more troops for Afghanistan

BRUSSELS, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- NATO leaders say they need more troops to fight Taliban guerrillas in southern Afghanistan.

Gen. James Jones, the alliance's top commander, is set to meet in Warsaw, Poland, this weekend with generals from the 26 NATO nations, to try to shore up forces.

He said commanders on the ground, taken aback by the level of violence, have asked for several hundred additional troops and more helicopters and airlift.

"We are talking about modest reinforcements," he told the BBC at NATO European headquarters in Belgium.
