Pope Benedict XVI shows fondness for red

VATICAN CITY, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Papal observers say Pope Benedict XVI is showing a fondness for red hats, like the one he wore at the Vatican Wednesday's weekly general audience.

Benedict wore a broad-brimmed hat designed to offer protection from the sun, reminiscent of the so-called "saturno" or Saturn model worn by Pope John XXIII, who reigned from 1958 to 1963, ANSA said.

Last winter, the pope was seen wearing the "camauro," a red velvet hat with white fur trim that was also last worn by John XXIII. ANSA said the papal camauro dates back to the 12th century.
