Bilking charges eyed in Utah starve case

WEST VALLEY, Utah, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Utah authorities Wednesday investigated the alleged starvation of a young disabled girl whose mother was serving in Iraq.

Michael J. Bowden was charged with child abuse and could face additional charges stemming from his alleged withdrawals from the girl's mother's bank account.

The Salt Lake Tribune said the 5-year-old, who suffers severe cerebral palsy, was recovering at Primary Children's Hospital. She had been found in an emaciated condition after 10 months in Bowden's care.

West Valley, Utah, police told the newspaper Bowden had been given a broad power of attorney over the woman's finances, which could make it difficult to prosecute him for any financial crime.
