Imelda Marcos may seek Manila mayoralty

MANILA, Philippines, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos, widow of the late dictator Ferdinand who was driven out of power in 1986, may decide to run for mayor of Manila.

The 77-year-old former beauty queen, known for her flamboyance and penchant for shopping sprees, may seek the mayoralty next year because she still remains popular in Manila's shanty towns, Britain's Independent, quoting her daughter, reported.

If she decides to run, Marcos will be opposed by two opposition senators and a wealthy businessman, the report said.

Ferdinand Marcos fell from power in 1986 following a popular non-violent uprising, and fled to Hawaii where he died three years later. Among items found in the presidential palace were 1,220 pairs of shoes belonging to Imelda Marcos.

Ferdinand Marcos was accused of stealing billions of dollars during his rule. Imelda Marcos returned to the Philippines in 1990.
