Tough election road seen for Republicans

WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- The home stretch of the mid-term U.S. congressional race apparently won't get any easier for the Republicans, strategists say.

Political strategists and officials from both the GOP and the Democrats told the Washington Post Sunday the Republicans could lose control of the House as the number of Republican districts considered vulnerable increases.

The Post said some Republicans believe as many as 35 districts could be lost to the Democrats compared to about 20 originally considered vulnerable.

Independent pollsters conclude that President Bush's low approval ratings are chipping away at Republican congressional strength along with unhappiness over Iraq and continuing apprehension about the U.S. economy.

The Post said the Democrats see the potential for gains on Nov. 7 in New York and Ohio while the Republicans think they can pick up seats in Michigan and Wisconsin.
