Emergency declared in Baja over hurricane

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A red alert declared by Mexican officials in Baja California this week helped residents and tourists prepare for the arrival of a weakened Hurricane John.

Authorities in the popular Mexican resort location helped over 8,000 tourists and area residents find shelter Friday hours before the Category 2 storm brought 110 mph winds into the area.

"We did what we needed to do, and we've taken the precautions we could," Baja California Sur's secretary of state, Victor Manuel Guluarte Castro, said.

Hurricane John was downgraded by the National Hurricane Center in Miami and previously had not hit shore as it traveled up Mexico's western coast this week towards Baja.

With most residents hunkered down in their homes and businesses and tourists in secure shelters, there have been no reports of storm-related deaths.
