Polygamist waives extradition to Utah

LAS VEGAS, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Warren Jeffs, head of a breakaway Mormon sect, made a brief court appearance Thursday in Las Vegas and waived extradition to Utah.

Jeffs faces charges in Utah and Arizona of forcing young girls into polygamous marriages. The two states agreed Utah prosecutors will take priority because they have a stronger case.

During three minutes in front of a judge, Jeffs agreed to waive extradition, KLAS-TV reported. Two prosecutors from Washington County, Utah, watched the proceedings.

Jeffs, the head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, was arrested during a traffic stop Monday. He was on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted List.

The formal charge that Jeffs faces in Utah is two counts of forcible rape by accomplice. He is not charged with polygamy, although he is said to have 50 wives.
