Admirers remember Princess Diana

LONDON, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- About 100 people gathered outside Kensington Palace in London Thursday to leave flowers and other tributes on the ninth anniversary of Princess Diana's death.

The princess died in a car crash in Paris Aug. 31, 1997, with Dodi Fayed, son of Harrods Department Store owner Mohammed al-Fayed, and their chauffeur. An apartment in Kensington Palace was her London home after her separation from Prince Charles.

Thursday's crowd included members of the Diana Circle, a group founded to commemorate her. Admirers of the princess tied bouquets to the palace gates, The Mirror reported.

A movement has started to place a statue of Diana outside the palace as a permanent memorial on the 10th anniversary of her death next year.

Diana's death has given rise to conspiracy theories, with some suggesting she was killed by British intelligence agents. An investigation designed to put the theories to rest got a setback in June when Michael Burgess, coroner to the Queen's household, resigned, pleading the pressure of other work, the newspaper said.
