Texans least apt to have health insurance

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Texans are the most likely U.S. residents to lack health insurance and the earning power of Wyoming women is the least compared to their male counterparts.

U.S. Census Bureau statistics on "pocketbook issues" also showed more Mississippians live in poverty than anywhere else in the country, the Stateline.org news agency reported Wednesday.

While a quarter of Texans lack health insurance, only 8.7 percent of Minnesotans are uninsured, the lowest in the country, the bureau said.

Nationally, the bureau's Current Population Survey said 46.6 million U.S. residents were without health insurance in 2005, up 1.3 million from 2004.

And while 21 percent of Mississippians lived in poverty, only 7.5 percent of New Hampshire residents made less than the federal poverty level.

Wyoming had the lowest female-male earning ratio, with women's salaries averaging 61 percent of the men's. Washington, D.C. had the highest ratio, with women earning 91.4 percent as much as men.
