San Francisco driver goes on rampage

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- A San Francisco man faces 14 counts of attempted murder after going on a driving rampage and targeting pedestrians on sidewalks.

Omeed Aziz Popal, 29, was arrested after a police car blocked his Honda SUV Tuesday afternoon.

In his wake was a 15-square block wake of death, injuries and damages, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

At high speed, the vehicle first struck and killed a 54-year-old man from behind, the newspaper said.

"In some cases he drove on sidewalks; in some cases he drove in the street," police spokesman Neville Gittens said. "It runs the gamut in terms of how he targeted people that he hit."

After speaking with five victims at San Francisco General Hospital, Mayor Gavin Newsom told reporters most of the victims were in a state of shock but added all of those injured in San Francisco appeared "able to pull through." He said the victim in critical condition could face permanent injuries.

Popal's family members said he snapped under stress following his arranged marriage to a woman in Afghanistan, the Chronicle reported.
