LONDON, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Britain and Pakistan are negotiating the extradition to London of a suspect in the alleged plot to blow up U.S.-bound aircraft.

Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam told Sky News Britain had requested Rashid Rauf, who once lived in Birmingham, be returned to London for interrogation.

Rauf is in jail in Islamabad on charges of possessing "tampered traveling documents," The Times of India reported.

Pakistani authorities said Rauf, a British citizen, was a "key person" in the alleged plot British police shut down in an Aug. 10 in arrest sweep around London and Birmingham.

Investigators believe suicide Islamist guerrillas planned to down as many as 10 aircraft flying to the United States by assembling bombs from liquids in their carry-on baggage.
