Journalist-activist John Wilson dies at 56

NEW YORK, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- John Wilson, assistant to The New York Times science editor and founding member of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, has died in New York.

Wilson was 56.

His partner, Richard Poirier, said it appeared Wilson had a heart attack or a stroke when he died Friday.

Wilson worked as a science editor since joining the Times in 1998. Previously he had been an assistant city editor at the Detroit News and had also held editing positions at the Rockford (Ill.) Register News, the Washington Times, the Miami Herald and the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Sun-Sentinel.

He is survived by his mother, Barbara Wilson, and his brother Rick Wilson, both of Milton, W.Va.
