Report: Bin Laden living in Pakistan

WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Elusive al-Qaida terror leader Osama bin Laden is living in the far north of Pakistan, several U.S. intelligence officials told CNN.

One senior military official who requested anonymity said bin Laden is likely in an area called Chitral, as in a 2003 video bin Laden released, trees that are peculiar to that region can be seen as bin Laden walks in a mountainous region.

Also, the official said it takes about three weeks for bin Laden's audiotapes to reach such news outlets as the Arabic al-Jazeera network, supporting the theory of his remote hide-out. He also said rather than hiding in a cave, bin Laden more likely lives in a nondescript house with no more than two bodyguards to avoid attracting attention.

However in the same report, Mahmud Durrani, the Pakistan ambassador to the United States, told CNN that Chitral is "the last place" bin Laden would be.

"They don't like him," he said. "In Chitral, he would stand out like a sore thumb."

Durrani repeated Pakistan's claim it is searching for bin Laden and his associates but said bin Laden is in neighboring Afghanistan, the CNN report said.
