Austrian girl, captive 8 years, escapes

VIENNA, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- An 18-year-old Austrian girl kidnapped and held captive for the last eight years has been reunited with her parents after escaping from her abductor's car.

Natascha Kampusch apparently bolted from a car stopped in traffic in suburban Vienna, and ran screaming for help. She vanished when she was 10 on March 2, 1998, while walking to school.

She told police she had been kept in a cellar with limited freedom since her abduction, The Times of London reported.

Police spokesman Erich Zwettler said the girl was "with 98 percent certainty" Natascha Kampusch, and a DNA test was carried out and that she had been asked questions only the real Natascha would be able to answer.

Meanwhile, the girl's parents were at a secure location where she was being kept.

The driver of the car she escaped from was identified as Wolfgang Priklopil, 44, whom the newspaper said was "known to police."

His car was found abandoned in a parking lot and he apparently committed suicide later on Wednesday by jumping in front of a commuter train, police said.
