NATO airstrike kills 11 Taliban fighters

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Eleven Taliban fighters were killed in a NATO airstrike in the southern Afgan province of Kandahar, NATO officials said Wednesday.

The strike took place late Tuesday after NATO forces discovered a militant ambush along a main highway. After being exposed, the Taliban fighters fled to a nearby compound, which was then bombed.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force said in a statement it "assesses 11 Taliban were killed in the airstrike while two insurgents were later seen leaving the compound."

ISAF recently took over much of the security duty in southern Afghanistan, a long time stronghold for the Taliban.
