The incident occurred at a border post near India's eastern Assam state, reports the Calcutta Telegraph.
India's Border Security Force sources told the newspaper the firing lasted about 12 minutes. The Indian side said there were no casualties on its side but that two Bangladeshi civilians may have died in the exchange of fire.
The Border Security Force claimed the incident resulted after a group of Bangladeshi farmers, prodded by their soldier, started to till a plot of land claimed by India.
