Diplomats evacuated from Congo

KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Some international diplomats have been evacuated from the Democratic Republic of Congo because of violence arising from last month's presidential elections.

The evacuations were carried out by U.N. and European peacekeepers, reports the Voice of America.

There have been gun battles between supporters of the two leading presidential contenders who will face a run-off. Incumbent President Joseph Kabila got less than 50 percent of the votes from the first elections. His rival is Vice President Jean-Pierre Bemba, a former rebel leader.

The two will face off in the second round of elections set for Oct. 29.
