LONDON, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- The FBI confirms it has been told by British security officials to stop leaking details of the alleged terrorist plot to blow up trans-Atlantic airliners.
"The shutters have come down," an FBI official told London's Observer. "We have been told not to discuss the case anymore."
British intelligence agencies angrily objected to FBI briefings that leaked sensitive details of the investigation, fearing they could hamper the gathering of evidence and jeopardize the chances of a successful prosecution.
Fears are growing among some Scotland Yard officers they may have acted too hastily when arresting 24 suspects in the alleged plot earlier this month, the Observer says.
Britain's Home Office maintains police had to act once key suspect Rashid Rauf was arrested in Pakistan, triggering concerns the alleged terrorist cell would either scatter or look to implement the plot as soon as possible.
