Bomb suspect arrested in Germany

KIEL, Germany, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- One of two suspects in a failed attempt to bomb German trains was arrested Saturday.

The man, described as a Lebanese national, was detained at the train station in Kiel, a northern port, Deutsche Welle reported. Police found explosives at the Kiel train station.

Two suitcase bombs were found in July on trains bound for Dortmund and Koblenz. Both failed to detonate.

Joerg Ziercke, director of the Federal Crime Office, said the 55-pound bombs were timed to explode about 10 minutes before the trains arrived and would have created "a fireball" on each train.

Police found footage of two young men wheeling the bomb-containing suitcases taken by security cameras. On Friday, the videotape was released.

"We are now working on the basis that this was the work of a terrorist group based in Germany and that it was an attempt to kill a large number of people," Rainer Griesbaum, a federal prosecutor, said Friday.
