She was escorted to Aiiku Hospital by her husband, Prince Akishino, second son of Emperor Akihito, The Japan Times reported.

The princess, 34 weeks pregnant, has been diagnosed with partial placenta previa. She is expected to deliver the baby by Caesarean section in September.

The child could become heir to the throne, since the Crown Prince's only child is a daughter. While there has been discussion of changing the law of succession to allow a woman to reign, many Japanese oppose the idea.
