Chicago cardinal released from hospital

MAYWOOD, Ill., Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Cardinal Francis George of the Chicago Archdiocese was discharged from a Maywood, Ill., hospital Tuesday after being treated for bladder cancer.

George, 69, thanked the doctors at Loyola University Medical Center and his supporters around the world Tuesday before returning to his Chicago home, The Chicago Tribune reported.

"There was not a lot of pain then, not a lot of pain now, but a lot of pain in between," he said. "There was hope then and better-founded hope now that I'll be alright."

The Chicago Roman Catholic Archdiocese said the cardinal is expected to resume his regular schedule after Labor Day but probably will not attend outside appointments until October.
