Eight states to vote on same-sex ban

MADISON, Wis., Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Same-sex marriage will be on the ballot in eight U.S. states this November but gay advocates are most interested in South Dakota, Wisconsin and Colorado.

Colorado residents will have a chance to ban gay marriage as well as adopt a measure legally sanctioning gay and lesbian relationships and providing them with many of the benefits of marriage, Stateline.org reports.

In South Dakota and Wisconsin, where voters will be asked whether to amend their state constitutions to ban same-sex marriage, the outcome is uncertain, recent polls show, Stateline said.

A Mason-Dixon poll conducted in South Dakota last week showed 49 percent of likely voters opposed the ban while 41 percent favored it.

The most recent poll in Wisconsin indicated a majority of voters support a ban but in June polling showed the electorate was split down the middle, the Web site said.

Other states poised to vote on a same-sex marriage ban are Arizona, Idaho, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
