Cardinal George recovers from surgeries

CHICAGO, July 31 (UPI) -- The Archdiocese of Chicago says Cardinal Francis George is in stable condition after two surgeries in two days.

The cardinal, who has cancer, had surgery Thursday to remove his bladder, his prostate gland, part of his right ureter and several lymph nodes, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. He had a second surgery early Friday to stop internal bleeding from the initial surgery.

As of Saturday, the cardinal was doing well.

"There is no sign of further bleeding with blood counts remaining stable," the archdiocese said in a statement on its Web site. "The cardinal expresses his gratitude for all the prayers that have been offered for him and appreciates continuing prayers on his behalf."

The archdiocese said the next update on the cardinal's condition would be given at 2:30 p.m. Central time Monday.
