ACRE, Israel, July 29 (UPI) -- An Arab member of the Israeli parliament was stabbed Saturday in what appeared to be an attack motivated by religious hatred.

Abbas Zakur was one of two people injured in the assault, Ha'aretz reported.

The attack occurred in Acre, a city in northern Israel with a mixed population. Three men first attacked an Arab man and then harassed Zakur's sister, who tried to escape to her brother's house.

When Zakur appeared, the men stabbed him, inflicting a minor wound, and fled.

Zakur said the three spoke Hebrew with Russian accents. They were chanting slogans against Hezbollah and its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, during the assaults.
