'Islamophobia' on rise in Europe

BRUSSELS, July 28 (UPI) -- A new report says racism and xenophobia are becoming more common in Europe with Muslims as the prime target.

The European Network Against Racism reported it found "increased tolerance for discriminatory behavior particularly against immigrants and Muslims," The Independent reported.

The group said government policies in many countries are contributing to the atmosphere, citing measures taken in Britain after the London Transport bombings in July 2005, and French immigration policies.

While the victims of racism are diverse, including Jews and Roma or Gypsies, the group said "Islamophobia" has risen in the past year.

"The rise of intolerance and discrimination toward Muslims has risen in the last year and the underlying tones of Islamophobia have infiltrated all forms of public and private lives for Muslims in Europe," the report said.
