12,000 in NYC without power for a week

NEW YORK, July 24 (UPI) -- Some 12,000 New York residents were without power Monday, the seventh day of a utility failure that has come under the governor's scrutiny.

At a Sunday news conference, Consolidated Edison officials reported progress in replacing feeder cables to the northwest borough of Queens that failed last Monday.

Kevin Burke, Con Ed's chief executive officer said the initial failure affected about 100,000 people, and was caused by an unprecedented failure of multiple power lines, NY1.com reported. The utility has pledged to reimburse residents up to $7,000 for spoiled food and other damages, and the city has promised to assist small businesses affected, The New York Times reported.

The Red Cross is operating mobile units for emergency medical treatment and to hand out food and water.

A spokesman for Gov. George Pataki said the governor was monitoring the situation closely and had spoken to Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the city's emergency management officials and had offered any necessary assistance.
