Vigil part of immigration movement

MIAMI, July 23 (UPI) -- A new immigrant-rights campaign in Florida is aimed at lobbying Congress and discouraging local ordinances that target undocumented workers.

As Congress delays action on new immigration legislation, some local governments from Florida to Pennsylvania are drafting measures targeting undocumented immigrants.

The first test of whether the local proposals will prevail in Florida is expected to come Monday night when the Avon Park City Council in Central Florida votes on a proposed ordinance that would bar renting or leasing property to undocumented immigrants.

The Florida Immigrant Coalition is a leading force in a campaign by immigrant advocates intended to convince Congress to pass legislation legalizing millions of undocumented immigrants, the Miami Herald reported.

The campaign is also aimed at dissuading cities and towns throughout the nation from passing local ordinances against undocumented immigrants.
