SAN DIEGO, July 21 (UPI) -- A plan to convert San Diego's sewage into drinking water appears likely to be flushed.

Mayor Jerry Sanders has announced that he opposes the plan, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

"I don't think the public wants to have this issue before them again," Sanders said.

Marco Gonzalez, a lawyer for environmental groups, said he still believes the project will become reality, because it is a better alternative than dumping treated sewage into the Pacific Ocean. He said Sanders' stance raises the bar.

A task force spent two years and $1 million studying reclamation.

San Diego imports about 85 percent of its water and demand is rising. Sanders said he believes that alternatives like desalinization or importing even more water are more palatable.
