Dems' Reid to revive Senate Iraq debate

WASHINGTON, July 21 (UPI) -- Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he plans to revive debate on the Iraq war in the Senate and described violence in the country as a "civil war."

Reid, in a CNN report, said Thursday he has been "somewhat gingerly approaching this ... No longer. There is a civil war going on in Iraq. In the last two months, more than 6,000 Iraqis have been killed. That's averaging more than 100 a day being killed in Iraq and we need to make sure there is a debate on this."

The senator told CNN his party plans to introduce a number of measures related to Iraq during the final week of July, the same week as scheduled debates on the Defense appropriations bill.

Republicans questioned Reid's plans and pointed out the divides among Democrats on some Iraq-related issues, including withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, CNN reported.
