WASHINGTON, July 21 (UPI) -- A strict curfew for youths under 16 will be going into effect in the District of Columbia soon.

Officials have not set an exact starting date but when they do, anyone under 16 will not be allowed outdoors after 10 p.m., The Washington Post said.

The curfew is part of an emergency crime bill passed by the D.C. City Council, and endorsed by Mayor Anthony Williams. It was prompted by an increase in robberies and weapon offenses committed by juveniles.

Officials believe the curfew will help reduce crime by keeping potential offenders and their victims off the streets at night.

The curfew will affect not only youths living in the District of Columbia but those who are visiting unless they are accompanied by a parent or have the written permission of a parent, the Post reported.

Provisions of the emergency crime bill will expire in 90 days and the city council will then decide whether to make the changes permanent.
