Afghan rocket attack kills U.S. soldier

KABUL, Afghanistan, July 21 (UPI) -- A U.S. solider was killed in Afghanistan Friday when rockets and mortars hit a coalition base in the eastern province of Paktika, U.S. military officials said.

Insurgents reportedly fired several rounds of artillery at the base earlier Friday. The soldier was taken to a medical center where he died from his wounds.

The name of the U.S. soldier has yet to be released.

Insurgent attacks in eastern and southern Afghanistan have been increasing in recent months.
