DeWine ad uses faked footage of 9/11

CLEVELAND, July 20 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine's campaign has acknowledged using faked footage of the attack on the World Trade Center in a campaign commercial.

The Ohio Republican's ad attacks his Democratic opponent, Rep. Sherrod Brown, claiming he is ineffective on national security, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. But the footage shows smoke billowing out of the South Tower at the World Trade Center while the North Tower is still intact -- although the North Tower was the first to be hit by a 747. U.S. News and World Report was the first to pick up on the discrepancy.

"The senator was unaware that the image of the towers was a graphic representation and has instructed the campaign to replace the footage with a picture of the twin towers," a spokesman, Brian Seitchik, said.

Seitchik said the message about Brown would remain the same.

Joanne Kuebler, a spokeswoman for Brown, called the commercial "shameful" and said the doctored footage "sinks to a new low."

DeWine is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
