WASHINGTON, July 18 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton has the biggest campaign war chest of any of the putative 2008 presidential candidates.
The New York Democrat's latest financial reports show that she has raised $44 million during the election cycle and has $22 million available, The Hill reports. Since she is expected to have an easy race for the Senate this year, she is likely to have unspent funds to give her a head start for 2008.
Her leadership political action committee, Hill PAC, has $100,000 on hand.
On the Republican side, Sen. John McCain of Arizona has $1.1 million on hand in the account of Friends of John McCain, which has raised $11,000 in the past three months. His leadership PAC, Straight Talk America, has $762,000 in the bank after raising more than $2 million through May.
McCain has been using PAC money for trips in support of Republican candidates, valuable work in building a presidential campaign.
