Northeast flooding tab could top $1B

NEW YORK, July 16 (UPI) -- Floods in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania could end up costing more than $1 billion, it was reported Sunday.

Floods that began June 27 left dozens of communities without business districts, hundreds of roads and bridges washed out and some areas -- homes still lacking power, the New York Times reported.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has already approved $6.6 million for New York state.

Displaced homeowners and renters in Pennsylvania have received $5 million for short-term housing and immediate repairs, the state's Emergency Management Agency said.

In New Jersey, where the scope of the damage was smaller, about $140,000 has been distributed, FEMA said.

At least 20 people died in the floods stretching from Virginia to Vermont.

Many areas saw waters rise up to the second stories of buildings, while in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., water nearly reached the top of a 41-foot-high levee.
