SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 14 (UPI) -- A California jury Friday resolved a dispute between Michael Jackson and a former business associate by ordering the pop star to pay $900,000 and get $200,000.
F. Marc Schaffel, who produced television specials and a never-released charity record for Jackson, claimed he was owed $1.6 million. In his counter-suit, Jackson claimed that Schaffel owed him $1 million.
During the two-week trial, jurors heard details about Jackson's business dealings and his often casual way of managing them, The Los Angeles Times reported.
Schaffel's lawyers depicted Jackson as someone who pretended to be casual and naïve, but who was actually involved in the details of his finances. Jackson's lawyers said the singer is easy to exploit.
Jackson has made millions of dollars during his career as a singer and through investments like the Beatles songbook. But he has also spent millions on everything from his Neverland Ranch to legal expenses when he was prosecuted for allegedly sexually abusing a minor.
