TAVARES, Fla., July 14 (UPI) -- The trial of a Florida man accused of abducting, raping and killing a 9-year-old girl has been postponed after the judge decided to look elsewhere for a jury.
John Couey faces the death penalty if he is convicted of the murder of Jessica Marie Lunsford.
The crime took place in Citrus County on Florida's west coast, and Judge Richard Howard hoped to find a jury in nearby Lake County. But he gave up after four days, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
State Attorney Brad King said a place must be selected that has the same general demographics as Florida's Fifth Judicial Circuit, which covers a group of five counties on the west coast and in north central Florida.
"I expect there are places in Florida that people have not heard as much about the case as they have in the Fifth Circuit," King said.
The prosecution has had a number of setbacks. Howard last week ruled that prosecutors could not use a statement Couey made to police because he had asked for a lawyer, and prosecutors have been barred from presenting evidence that Couey assaulted a girl in 1978.
Lawyers expect the trial to start in the fall.
